Corporation tax cut to 17%, and personal tax thresholds have risen. As expected, letting agencies were targeted for their vast charges for services such as administration and referencing. Tax avoidance clampdown aims to raise extra £2bn by 2022, with measures to include targeting incorporated operations and changing small business schemes

  • Brexit – Any future negotiations with Brussels is shaping up to be challenging. In anticipation of US tit-for-tat, the EU is proposing to tighten its grip over overseas banks operating in the eurozone, which could potentially hurt the City of London after Brexit. Getting there might be more of a challenge with Scottish MPs threatening to employ ‘Claim of Right’  against the UK government.   • Tech news – Facebook puts faith in UK tech with pledge to add 500 jobs. Uber-style service to book carers ‘on demand’ has been launched nationally. Airbnb looks to secure 700 tax deals with cities
  • European politics – Political populism: Is Italy next? And in France, Sarkozy concedes as Fillon causes upset in primary. Merkel to seek fourth term as Germany’s leader
  • Brexit – Scotland and Wales win permission to intervene in Article 50 case
  • Tax and Pensions – Film investors face ‘life-changing’ bills for tax avoidance: Sports stars, financiers and celebrities caught out by Eclipse 35 investment scheme. Those working in the Self-employed, gig economy face calls to take out pensions
  • Planning – Garden city pioneers warn against looser planning rules: Town planner says development must not come at cost of quality of life
